How does it work?
A small needle (one of the smallest made) is inserted into the
vein. A solution is injected into the vein that causes the
inside of the vein to be slightly inflamed. When it is inflamed,
the inside is “sticky.” The area of treated vein is then wrapped
with a compression wrap for 3-5 days, depending on the vein
size. This compression holds the vein together so it will seal
shut. Over time the vein shrinks, therefore, no blood is in the
vein so the color (red, blue) fades or disappears.
What solution is used?
A salt/alcohol solution is used. There is minimal pain on
injection. The solution has been used for over 20 years.
Traditionally, a salt solution was used which does cause pain on
injection and has a higher complication rate.
What type of results can I expect?
Most veins will
lighten and/or disappear. Small varicose veins usually become
flat. Sclerotherapy does not yield perfect results. Improvement
usually occurs, but perfection is rarely achieved. As long as
you expect improvement and not perfection, you should be
satisfied.
Are results usually permanent?
The effect on the veins treated usually lasts in the majority of
cases. However, new areas of veins can develop over time.
Sclerotherapy treats the problem at this time. It does not
prevent new veins from showing up in other areas.
What are the complications?
The complications of Sclerotherapy include: pigmentation,
matting (tiny veins around the area treated) and ulceration.
These rarely occur.
What causes spider veins and what can I do
to prevent them?
Unfortunately, spider veins are a very common problem. A family
history of vein disease is most likely an underlying cause.
Pregnancy or excess weight may increase spider veins if you have
a tendency to develop them.
Are they dangerous or will they develop
into larger veins?
Spider veins are not dangerous and need not be treated except to
improve the looks of your legs (which is a good reason). Spider
veins are veins that are within the skin layers. Varicose veins
are below the skin. Spider veins never turn into varicose veins.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments depends on the location and sizes of
the veins. A standard amount of solution is used for each
session. Dr. Foreman will give you an estimate of number of
sessions. Occasionally areas may need re-treatment or “touch
up.”
Will I be happy with Sclerotherapy?
You will be satisfied as long as you understand the limitations
of the procedure. Full results may take from 6 weeks to 6
months. Everyone’s veins react differently. If you expect
perfection, please don’t do it. If you have a realistic goal of
improvement, you should be happy.
